Weekend Travel Guide to the Outer Banks

Being able to travel and share my experiences through photos and places has become so much fun for me.  I find I can pay more attention to the spots we visit and build memories that will last.  That is why this weekend travel guide to the Outer Banks for Father’s Day weekend was so satisfying.  I planned some of this itinerary and then once we got to the Outer Banks let the spontaneity flow—this is our best way to enjoy a family trip together.

First, we stayed at the most amazing house that really speaks to the simplicity and style I aspire to incorporate into my life.  The Casita in Kill Devil Hills is a Mediterranean inspired beach cottage and was impeccably created.  Once you arrive, you may never want to leave.  It is perfect for a weekend getaway with outdoor shower, great proximity to both ocean and bay side.  The rental comes with cruiser bikes which makes enjoying the area idyllic.  Every detail was thoughtfully considered by the designers. It truly is a lovely holiday escape.  The home has an open concept living & kitchen space, 2 bedrooms with queen sized and incredibly comfortable beds & 1 bathroom.

Our trip was very relaxing. We spent one day cruising around the area on bikes, a morning getting fresh coffee at The Front Porch, an afternoon at the beach, a night cooking at the house together, and another educational afternoon exploring Wright Brothers Memorial.  Our favorite experience in the Outer Banks was a spontaneous trip to the town of Manteo on Roanoke Island where we learned about the famous Lost Colony and the unsolved mystery of 115 early settlers vanishing from their colony settlement in the 1500’s—a fascinating American History lesson.  On our way around the town, we stumbled upon a father and his two kids jumping off the bridge by the pier and learned that this is a summer past time in the town that has been around for generations.  It looked like fun, so we grabbed our bathing suits and tried it ourselves.  Without a doubt, a highlight of the weekend.

It seems the Outer Banks is for any type of traveler.  Whether you like biking, boating, beachcombing, fishing, surfing, swimming, shopping, dining, drinking…you can find it.

One of the best parts about the Outer Banks was catching the sunset over the bayside. It was breathtaking and something straight out of the popular series “Outer Banks”. Imagine being able to spend an entire summer here?  We had a hard time leaving this little slice of heaven.  However, we had a full trip itinerary ahead of us to explore the rest of North Carolina with our next stop to Durham.  If you are looking for more ideas on where to go and what to do, check out my blog post on “Why Durham is Worth A Visit.”
